How Do You Know Who to Marry? by Patti Greene

Two Hearts
Two Hearts

A younger woman (whom I have known for a while) came to me with one of life’s biggest questions: “How do you know who to marry? “

As an older woman, Scripture calls me to guide — so I shared the simple truth God put on my heart. (She has approved my sharing to help others who may have the same question).

The Question

Dear Miss. Patti (Dear‑Abby Style),

I’m in my mid‑30s, and I’ve never dated before. Lately I’ve been thinking about what it would be like to have someone by my side, but I’m also nervous. My mother went through painful experiences with men, and I don’t want to repeat her story.

How do you know when a man is truly ‘the one’? How did you know your husband was the right person for you? I would really appreciate your wisdom.

No Name

My Response

1. Shared Faith

Your question is a wonderful one, and I’m glad you asked. The very first thing to look for is that he is a born‑again believer who truly follows Jesus. Not just in words, but in the way he lives.

“Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers.” — 2 Corinthians 6:14

Watch how he treats people — waitresses, coworkers, his parents. A man who honors others will honor you.

2. Character & Respect

Pay attention to his everyday behavior.

• Does he speak kindly?
• Does he show patience?
• Does he respect your boundaries?
• Does he listen to you?
• Does he treat you like someone valuable?

Avoid anyone who yells, belittles, pressures, or shows signs of anger or a need for control.

“Love is patient and kind… it does not insist on its own way.” — 1 Corinthians 13:4–5

3. Purity & Clear Thinking

Avoid premarital sex. It clouds judgment, creates emotional confusion, and can hide red flags. Purity protects your heart and helps you see clearly.

“Flee from sexual immorality.” — 1 Corinthians 6:18

A man who honors God with his body will honor God with his marriage.

4. Shared Life Direction

Ask yourself:

• Are we spiritually compatible?
• Can we talk openly and trust each other?
• Do we laugh together?
• Is he responsible with work or finances?
• Does he want children?
• Would I be stepping into a family he already has?

Marriage is partnership — not just romance.

5. Family & Community Insight

  • Introduce him to people who love you and know you well.
  • Ask for honest feedback.
  • Sometimes others see things we miss.

6. Commitment Before God

Marriage is a covenant before the Lord.

Yes, you vow to love each other, but you also promise God to walk through life together ‘til death do you part. Hard seasons will come, and you need a man who will stand with you, not run away.

“What God has joined together, let no man separate.” — Mark 10:9

This does not mean you have to stay with someone who is abusive or unfaithful. But it does mean choosing someone steady, faithful, and committed.

7. My Own Story

You asked how I knew my husband was right for me. We met at church, and both of us were ready to commit ourselves to marriage — not just emotionally, but spiritually. He was kind to me from the very beginning. We talked openly, shared our hearts, and learned to trust each other.

One of the first signs of his sincerity was his visit to me in the hospital early in our relationship. That told me he truly cared. He treated my mother with respect and tenderness, and that meant a lot to me.

Our backgrounds, education, and upbringings were very different — but Jesus was at the center for both of us. That has held us together for 47 years.

We never believed there was only one possible person in the world we could have married. Instead, we believed marriage was a covenant before God — a commitment to honor, cherish, and walk with one another for the rest of our lives. And by God’s grace, that is what we have done and continue to do.

“Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain.” — Psalm 127:1
“Love never fails.” — 1 Corinthians 13:8

8. Final Thoughts

After 47 years of marriage, the biggest indicators I’ve seen are these:

  • Does he love the Lord?
  • Does he truly love you?
  • Does he respect you?
  • Do you love him?
  • What does his past tell you about his patterns?

Pray over these things. Search the Bible. God will guide you along the way!

Bible Verse:

Show me your ways, Lord. Teach me your truth. Guide me because you are the God who saves me.

—Psalm 24:4-5

Prayer:

O holy God, you know my heart. You know the many questions that swirl around in my mind. Please help me know and feel You working in my life, answering my many questions, and leading me along the path You want me to be on, with or without a spouse. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Writing and Ministry Together

Q. What inspires your writing the most?

A. What inspires my writing the most is the word of God. I love the word of God. I can spend forever in it. I never get enough of it. That’s the key thing that inspires my writing, because I take it in, I meditate on it, and I think about how to apply it in my life.

The second thing that inspires my writing is my walk with God. As I take in His word and walk it out, it becomes an adventure. My writing comes from the things I learn and the things I draw from walking with Him. I’m practicing His word and watching it work in my life, and I’m also walking with the people God brings into my life and seeing how His word works in their lives.

Those are the things that inspire my writing.

Word of God

Q. How does Scripture and personal experience shape your voice as a writer?

A. My writing is primarily shaped by the word of God and my experience of walking with God. Most of what I write comes from what I draw from Scripture—what I learn as I sit with the Holy Spirit and He opens my eyes to the word. He connects the Scriptures to my walk and to my experiences.

One thing I work hard on is not making my experience a standard for anyone else, because I know that’s not how God works. I also know that God uses His word to shape our walk, so I am learning from the word of God, and I am learning to walk the word of God, talk the word of God, and share that word by the way I live.

The people God brings into my life get to witness how the word of God works and produces fruit in the lives of those who believe. The word of God is the primary motivation for my writing, and aligning my walk with His truth helps confirm how His word works.

Q. What message do you feel God is asking you to share in this season?

A. Considering the season I am in and what God is doing in my life right now, I’m learning to see Him as the God who rescues people from troubles that they cannot get themselves out of, who redeems them from the ravages of the situations they’ve lived through, and who restores what was lost in the fire of affliction. These are the three messages God is working in my life currently, and I am seeing them and experiencing them.

I’m experiencing God rescue me. I’m experiencing God redeem me. And I’m sitting in the place where I am watching and seeing how God is doing this work of restoration in my own life. That’s what God is doing right now, and that’s the message—because, like my writing, I speak from my walk with God unless He specifically directs me to speak into something else. Most of the time, I draw from how He is revealing Himself as I walk in His word in my life and in my circumstances.

So right now, I am experiencing God as the One who rescues, the One who redeems, and the One who restores.

Q. How do you hope your writing will minister to others?

A. I am hopeful that my writing will minister to those who want to see God walking with them through their day‑to‑day experiences. I want it to reach those who long to encounter God in the places and ways I have encountered His power—to deliver, to help, to teach, to enlighten, and to heal.

I drink from the well of God through His word and through my life experiences, and I share what He has taught me and is still teaching me. I hope that people who are going through similar situations will find hope and encouragement through my writing and preaching, knowing they are not alone. When God says, “I will deliver,” He is fully able to do exactly that.

If people can see that He has done it in my life, maybe it will help them believe and hold on in those difficult and dark moments, knowing that God honors His word—not just to me, but to everyone who believes and waits for Him.

Praising God

FACT by Patti

During the years I’ve known Glory, one thing has never changed: the “word” is always on her mind. I’m not exaggerating. I counted how many times she answered my questions using the word “word” above. It was eighteen. Eighteen! And honestly, that didn’t surprise me at all. She LOVES God’s word—the Bible. It’s practically her native language. And her multiple books prove that. Yes, most are on Amazon.

Glory and I met at a Bible study in Lagos, Nigeria, and we bonded immediately. One of the first things she shared with me was her poetry. I offered to help edit her poetry, not realizing I was about to enter a whole new world. You see, I’ve never been a big poetry person—but I didn’t tell her that. Then came the moment I sat down with her poems. Oh my. After going through a multitude—and I mean a multitude—of poems, I started to understand how Glory thinks, how she writes, and how deeply she listens to God. Somewhere between poem number twenty and poem number “I’ve lost count,” I realized she wasn’t just a good writer. She was a gifted one.

Glory and Patti, 2019

Over time, we’ve helped each other with our writing. But the funniest season was when I wrote three Bible Word Search Puzzle books. I had a program that created the puzzles using words I found in the New Testament. The problem? The program didn’t weed out bad words. Yes, you read that right. Bad words. In a Christian word search puzzle. So before publishing, I had to go through EVERY puzzle and hunt for anything inappropriate.

Naturally, I called on Glory. There aren’t too many friends one feels comfortable saying, “Hey, can you look for bad words in my book?”

At first, I asked her to look for twenty bad words. Then I narrowed it down to the worst five. That’s the kind of friend she is—she will sit with you, laugh with you, pray with you, and help you make sure your Bible puzzles don’t accidentally turn into something you’d have to repent for.

We help each other do good works, and we have fun doing it. And honestly, if you’ve ever wondered whether Christian word search authors go buggy searching for bad words—yes, we do. And Glory helped. She always helps. And her writing shows that same heart: steady, faithful, thoughtful, and full of God’s truth.

Bible Verse: “My heart is overflowing with a good theme… my tongue is the pen of a ready writer.” Psalm 45:1

Prayer:

Dear Jesus, thank you for friends who encourage, love, and help us with our needs, whether big or small. Let us love your word so much that it is always on our mind, guiding us how to live, write, or whatever we do. Let us see You as the One who rescues,  redeems, and restores us, as we follow You in our lives. Amen.

A Small Beginning, A Faithful God by Patti Greene

If you are receiving this blog via email, clicking the post title will show the best version.

Sometimes God begins His work in the smallest, quietest ways. I recently wrote an article for The Baptist Standard about one of those moments, and how the Lord wove His faithfulness through it all. If you need a reminder that God is present in the little things, this may bless you today.

Voices: A small beginning, a faithful God

Over the past five years, I have had the privilege of watching God do what only he can do. I’ve watched it through a Bible study we started in our subdivision.

I am not sharing this story to highlight my role, because this Bible study did not begin through human planning or strength. I am sharing it because remembering God’s faithfulness helps us see his heart more clearly.

Looking back on what he has done among us changes the way we view ministry. It reminds us God often begins with something small, quiet, and ordinary and then breathes life into it.

Pink New Testament

A testimony of God’s faithfulness

The Bible study in our subdivision began with a simple desire to open God’s word with others. From the beginning, it was unmistakably a work of God. He gathered people, opened hearts, built community, answered prayers, and sustained us through seasons we never expected. He did it all in ways no one could take credit for.

As we look back, we see his grace. People have come to faith in Christ. Hearts have opened to Scripture for the first time. Those who once felt unsure or intimidated by the Bible have developed a hunger for it. Many of the ladies have grown deeper in their walk with Jesus, finding strength, comfort, and direction in his word.

One of the sweetest surprises has been watching people fall in love with the Old Testament. Books they once skipped or did not understand have become treasured parts of their faith. God has shown us every page of Scripture reveals his voice, his character, and his promises.

Through it all, God has never failed to provide a place for us to meet. Whether in homes, community spaces, or borrowed rooms, he has opened doors. He has given us places to gather, learn, pray, and share meals. He has provided what we needed, often before we knew we needed it.

Friendships have formed—sweet, unexpected, lasting friendships. People who weren’t connected to a church are now worshiping faithfully. Some have found church homes for the first time in years, while others have returned after long seasons away. God has used this study to gently draw people back into fellowship with his people.

Ladies’ prayers have been answered in ways only God could arrange. We have prayed for healing, direction, comfort, provision, and reconciliation. Time after time, God has shown himself faithful. Sometimes the answers came quickly, sometimes slowly, and sometimes in ways we did not expect—but they came.

We have walked with one another through loss. We have said goodbye to people we loved. We have watched others endure illness, grief, family struggles, and financial challenges, yet remain standing—not because the road was easy, but because God walked with them, and we walked together.
Community Women’s Bible Study

For many, the Bible has become alive and real. It has moved from being a book on a shelf to a daily companion, a source of strength, and a place of refuge. People are reading it with new eyes, a deeper understanding, and fresh joy.

Care groups began and multiplied. What started as a simple gathering of 12 has grown into a network of people who care for one another, check in, pray, help, and encourage. Servant leaders have stepped forward. People are quietly helping people—not for recognition, but because they love the Lord and his people.

And there is so much more God has done that we may never see or hear about. Ministry often happens behind the scenes: in private conversations, quiet prayers, small acts of kindness, and unseen sacrifices. Even when we do not see it, we know God is moving. He has been moving all along.

Reflecting on five years

Five years of grace.
Five years of growth.
Five years of God’s faithfulness.

As I reflect on these years, I believe our story can encourage any ministry, anywhere. God works through simple obedience. He blesses gatherings centered on his word. He grows ministries that make room for new, seasoned, hurting, and curious believers. He honors humility, faithfulness, and love.

It starts with the Word

Other ministries can take heart in these reminders:

  • Keep Scripture at the center. God honors his word.
  • Stay humble and flexible. He will provide the place, people, and timing.
  • Let relationships grow naturally. Ministry often grows through quiet friendships.
  • Expect God to work behind the scenes. Much of his work happens where no one is looking.
  • Trust him in hard seasons. Loss, change, and challenges do not stop his work; they often deepen it.
  • Make room for all kinds of people. God brings exactly whom he wants to bring.
  • Let God set the pace. Ministry grows best when we follow his lead rather than forcing our own.

If our story says anything, it is this: When God begins something, he sustains it. When his people gather around his word, he does more than we could plan, predict, or take credit for. When we stay small in our own eyes, he shows himself great.

This five-year story is not about us. It is about him—his kindness, provision, wisdom, timing, people, word, and glory.

May every ministry—large or small, new or established—be encouraged to trust God with the unseen, the unexpected, and the ordinary. He delights in taking simple beginnings and turning them into testimonies of his faithfulness.

To him be all the glory.

How to Pray for Someone Facing a Tough Decision by Patti Greene

If you are receiving this blog via email, clicking the post title will show the best version.

Jehoshaphat

Jehoshaphat, king of Judah, set judges throughout all the fortified cities of Judah and said to the judges, “Take heed to what you are doing, for you do not judge for man, but for the Lord, who is with you in the judgment.”

Judges

Sometimes, when I’m unsure how to pray for someone who must make a difficult decision, the Lord gently shows me a pattern in His Word. As I was reading 2 Chronicles 19–20, I wasn’t trying to teach anything—just quietly seeking the Lord and asking how to pray for those who carry responsibility. In those verses, I began to notice a simple, Scripture‑shaped way to lift them up before Him, and I’m sharing it only in hopes that it might help someone else.

1. Pray for God’s judgment and will — When discernment is needed, ask that God’s will and true judgment guide the person’s decision-making process.

2. Pray for the person to be faithful and loyal — Ask the Lord to help the person act in faith with a heart loyal to Him.

3. Pray for freedom from guilt — Pray that the one making the decision will not carry guilt or condemnation as they choose the path that is right before God.

4. Pray for courage — Ask the Lord to give courage as the decision is made, because He is with those who seek to do what is right.

5. Pray for Holy Spirit guidance — Pray that the Holy Spirit leads the person in each step of the decision‑making process.

6. Pray against fear — Ask that the person will not be afraid or dismayed, remembering that the battle is not theirs, but God’s.

7. Pray for a steady, waiting heart — Pray that they stand still and watch for the salvation of the Lord.

This gentle pattern also reminded me that every decision we might need to make can rest peacefully in God’s hands, teaching us to seek Him with the same trust we pray for those who must choose wisely.

2 Chronicles

Bible Verse: “Do not be afraid nor dismayed, because of this great multitude, for the battle is not yours, but God’s.”
2 Chronicles 20:15

Prayer: Heavenly Father, as I seek to know your wisdom, please give me discernment for your guidance and peace. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Crossing the Jordan: Embracing Change

Leaving behind St. Louis for Houston was a big decision for my husband and me. While John was sorting out the details of his new job, I faced the daunting task of breaking the news to our three kids. Jennifer, our fiery 15-year-old, had carved out a life in Missouri she adored—friends, school, and yes, a boy.

I decided to spring the news at dinner, hoping for a touch of ceremony to soften the blow. But as soon as the words left my mouth, Jennifer’s reaction was swift and fierce. Plate clattering, she bolted upstairs, leaving me to ponder the storm ahead. In our family, Jennifer’s mood set the tone, and right then, it was far from sunny.

Life, it seems, is a series of transitions, some expected, others blindsiding us like a falling tree. From grade school to college, accidents to job changes, we navigate a winding path of change. But amidst the uncertainty, we can glean wisdom from the ancient tale of crossing the Jordan River—a journey laden with principles for navigating our own transitions.

The Israelites, led by Joshua, faced their own river of uncertainty, but unlike their predecessors, they embraced faith over fear. Let’s explore the lessons they learned.

Principle 1: Trust in Wise Leadership

In the turbulent sea of advice, the Israelites anchored themselves to Joshua, a leader chosen by God Himself. Unlike Absalom, who heeded disastrous counsel, Joshua followed divine guidance, paving the way for his people’s success. In times of transition, seeking counsel from trusted mentors and aligning with Godly wisdom can steer us in the right direction.

Principle 2: Find Strength in Faith and Reflection

Before crossing the Jordan, Joshua immersed himself in meditation and prayer, drawing strength from Scripture. Like him, we find solace and clarity in quiet reflection, fortifying our spirits for the journey ahead.

Principle 3: Prepare for the Journey

Preparation is the cornerstone of successful transitions. Just as Joshua instructed the Israelites to ready themselves before crossing, we too must equip ourselves for the road ahead. Whether it’s packing provisions or nurturing spiritual resilience, readiness ensures we face change with confidence.

Principle 4: Take Courageous Action

Like the Israelites stepping into the rushing waters, we must summon the courage to act. Sometimes, as Nike advocates, we simply need to “just do it.” Trusting in God’s provision, we forge ahead, knowing that victory awaits on the other side.

In the tapestry of life, transitions weave the threads of our stories, each change a brushstroke in the masterpiece of our journey. Whether it’s a move, a career shift, or a leap of faith, each transition holds the potential for growth and discovery.

As for Jennifer, her initial resistance melted into gratitude. Looking back, she sees how that move to Houston shaped her life—a Texas college, a loving marriage, and a family of her own. Sometimes, the most unexpected transitions lead to the greatest blessings.

So, as you stand on the brink of change, remember the lessons of the Jordan. Embrace the journey, trust in divine guidance, and step forward with courage. For beyond the river lies the promise of new beginnings and undiscovered joys.

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous! Do not be terrified nor dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9

Dear heavenly Father, as I live my life depending on You, may I honor You in all I do or think. Guide me and prepare me for whatever steps and paths You have chosen for me. Please open my eyes to understanding, so I can fully comprehend the Scriptures. Thank you. Amen.

THE WAIT IS OVER! My new book, Unstoppable: Go the Distance with God, is now available. Ready to inspire, strengthen, and encourage you to pursue God’s path with unwavering faith.  And as proof that miracles still happen, my “desk” is finally clear–turns out writing a book creates more clutter than ever imaginable.

But what you see below is a very messy table, with stacks of books and Bibles that filled every nook and cranny of my dining room as this book was being produced!

My work “desk” during a neat phase!

Unstoppable is officially LIVE and ready to jump off the shelves! You can grab it on Amazon or order it at your favorite local bookstore. But before I get into the wild ride that was my writing and publishing journey, let me tell you what’s inside.

This book began as a love letter to my children, a way for them to hear my voice long after I’m gone. But somewhere along the way, I realized it wasn’t just for them. It was for every believer, every seeker, every soul longing to know God more. The words are mine. Every thought, every bit of wisdom comes from a journey with the Lord. And I hope that as you read, you hear my voice—not just in ink, but in your heart. It is a book about the Bible, Prayer, Christian Living, Leadership, and Crises.

The Writing Process

Writing a book should come with a survival guide. Between editing, formatting, and proofing (more than one hundred times), I learned that endnotes and bibliographies were designed to evaluate human patience. My dining room transformed into a battlefield of books, sticky notes, and a laptop that looked like it had survived a war. In an attempt to feel like I was in control of something, I started frequenting the nail salon. If nothing else, the salon became a form of stress relief to me.

And then there were the technical nightmares—the formatting jargon no one warns you about. Acrobat, DPI, cropping, templates, first-line indents, hyperlinks, marketing strategies, and the dreaded Kindle Previewer. I wrestled with Smashwords, preorders, reflowable text, TOC (which I now believe stands for “Totally Overwhelming Chaos”), citations, quotation marks, italics, and hyphens. Every minor detail became a new mountain to climb. Somewhere between resizing eBook files and debating whether “almighty” should be capitalized or not, I pondered every life instance, from toddlerhood to now, that the Lord allowed me to until this moment. And yes, He prepared me.

What God Taught Me Through the Process

But in all the challenges, God was working on me. He taught me patience, the importance of time management (because writing at 2 a.m. is not sustainable), and the power of prayer (especially when my manuscript almost disappeared into the abyss). I learned about His glory and honor, self-control, thankfulness, and stick-to-itiveness. Quitting was never an option. The Lord reminded me that persistence matters, that gratitude changes everything, and that friends, faith, and a sound support system are essential.

The Publishing Process

Ah, publishing—the part where a writer either gets an agent or slowly realizes that the industry now requires social media influence and more friends than you have. After six months of rejections and feedback that I wasn’t quite “popular enough,” I did what any stubborn writer would do—I self-published. Again.

This final process was chaotic, exhausting, but God nudged me forward, whispering that this book mattered. And when God nudges, you listen and obey—even if you’re delirious from lack of sleep.

Conclusion

So, here it is—Unstoppable: Go the Distance with God. It’s in the wild now, floating in Amazon’s Sea of millions of books. Will it become a bestseller? Who knows. But that’s never been the point. It’s a book of faith, a book of endurance, and, frankly, a book that put me through the ringer. And I believe it’s meant for someone, maybe even you.

So, go ahead and grab a copy. Not just because I’d love for you to buy it,  but because I believe God has a purpose for everyone’s life, and it was written to help people live a godly life and “go the distance,” until God calls them home.

The Emotional Rollercoaster of Writing a Book

Writing a book is not for the faint of heart. It is an emotionally draining, physically taxing, and spiritually stretching experience. If you ever find yourself thinking, “Hey, I should write a book,” stop. Breathe. Brace yourself. And grab some chocolate because you’re going to need it.

Through this process, I’ve cried, moaned, and yelled at my computer. I possibly aged about 10 years in the span of a few years, but miraculously, I finished writing my eighth book! Do I feel accomplished? Sure. Do I feel like a semi-truck has run over me? Also, SURE!

God’s (Sometimes Hilarious) Guidance

From the beginning, I wanted to keep God’s Word close to my heart and follow the leading of the Spirit as I plodded along. And plod I did. This book was initially meant for my kids’ eyes only—a heartfelt collection of wisdom they could cherish long after I’m gone. Somewhere between draft number one and edit number 117, it transformed into something bigger, meant for anyone looking to deepen their faith and go the distance with God.

Throughout this journey, I had some hilarious conversations with God:

– “Lord, don’t ever have me do anything like this again.”

– “What if I find a typo after publishing?”

– “Wait… you want me to change the title AGAIN?”

– “Lord, you want me to start each chapter with a dead guy’s quote?”

To which God graciously replied (in the way only He can):

– “Remember, it’s for My honor and glory.”

“Don’t expect perfection—you’re human.”

– “Yes, you’re creative, so have fun matching titles and subtitles.”

– “Yup, because they will have less chance of a moral failure.”

So I pressed on, fueled by faith, prayer, and an alarming amount of caffeine.

Artificial Intelligence (AI)

FYI—Unstoppable is something deeply personal—not just a story, but a legacy. It was written with my tone and words, shaped by the people and places that mean so much to me. I started writing it before AI was even a thing, and while I consulted it a few times for organization and suggestions, I wanted every word to be mine. More than anything, I wanted my kids to hear my voice when they read it so that even when I’m gone, a part of me will always be with them.

Writing is a wild journey, but it’s always worth it when done for His glory. Thank you for your support, prayers, and patience. With that, I’m off to sip some tea and hopefully not write another book.

The Publishing Process—Otherwise Known as The Dark Process

If writing a book wasn’t hard enough, publishing it was monstrous. I initially tried to get an agent, thinking, “This is the way!” Six months of rejections later, I realized that I didn’t have enough friends, I was not an influencer, and traditional publishing wasn’t in my future.

So, I did what any stubborn, slightly sleep-deprived writer would do—self-publish. Again.

This meant 100+ edits (yes, in the hundreds), wrangling with formatting, citations, page numbers, and all the other things that make a writer question their life choices. Somewhere in this madness, my dining room transformed into a literal war zone—papers everywhere, sticky notes plastered on every available surface, and a laptop that looked like it had just returned from battle.

About To Pack Up!

I spent a lot of time at the manicurist’s shop for stress relief.  Newly painted nails made me feel better. Go figure! Maybe the pink, blue, or purple nails were an emotional boost for me, but whatever, it helped me.

But then came my biggest battle yet: the three-hole punch incident. A seemingly harmless office tool turned into a vengeful beast, sinking its metal teeth into my thumb in pure malice. For a brief, terrifying moment, I truly believed I had just given myself an unintentional body piercing. A nice, round hole right through my finger—a new, avant-garde look in literary injuries. I braced myself for the worst, mentally preparing to explain to my family why I needed stitches due to an attack from my own supplies.

Fortunately, I escaped with my finger intact—but not my dignity. I now approach the three-hole punch with great caution, side-eyeing it like it might strike again at any moment.

Yes, I Pondered!

I understand how some authors churn out books like it’s a buffet line—one scoop after another, no sweat. Especially the famous ones. Pastors-turned-authors, for instance, barely lift a pen! They hand off a stack of sermons, mumble something about “a few chapter ideas,” and—voila!—a whole book appears like magic. Meanwhile, I’m over here squinting at style guides, wondering who decided that footnotes should be an extreme sport. And don’t even get me started on getting the little dots in the Table of Contents to behave and connect to the correct page number. But honestly? Figuring it out myself makes the finished product feel like a victory lap, not just another book on the shelf.

The Cover Saga—A Journey Through Technology and Tears

As if everything else wasn’t chaotic enough, then came “the book cover.” There were endless possibilities, new technology to learn, and a steep learning curve that I was utterly unprepared for. My husband (who deserves a medal) for enduring this process with me agreed that I am a slow and inefficient learner, technologically speaking. Heck, I can’t even figure out a TV remote.

And he’s right. Formatting? Confusing. Image resolutions like DPI? A foreign language. Then, there was the magic art of making a cover look professional without wanting to pay someone else to do it. But, as the Lord always does, He took me step by step, preparing me and leading me through each frustrating cover.

Marketing and Advertising: The Thing I’d Rather Not Do

Marketing this book is not my favorite thing. In fact, I’d rather organize my sock drawer by color and season. But I believe in this book. It will reach the people who need it.  So, if you see me posting more about this book than usual, I am not trying to be an influencer. I am just trying to be obedient, and have folks learn more about the Bible, Prayer, Christian Living, Leadership, and how to handle Crises.

Two More Things . . .

First, for those who have prayed for me during this ministry, I want to say . . .

Second, if you ever want me to speak at your church, I may be able to. I cannot guarantee how polished my delivery will be (remember, I fought a three-hole punch and lost), but I promise honesty, laughter, and a deep love for God’s Word.

Upon the official release of this book, which will be very soon, I envision myself relaxing in a lawn chair on a beach, but it will most likely be sitting in a chair in Phoenix, watching the grandkids swim. Then, years later, I’ll pick up the book, read it as if someone else wrote it, and won’t care about any lingering typos. That’s the dream.

COMING SOON! Unstoppable: Go the Distance with God

So, what did I read while I was nearing the end of the book? A nice, simple fiction book about LOBOTOMIES! And it was so refreshing!

Prayer and Bible Ramblings

Prayer and Bible Ramblings by Patti Greene

Pray

The beauty of having your own blog is that you can ramble. That is precisely what I am doing in this blog. I am rambling about prayer and Bible study, my two favorite topics.

Since I accepted Christ 53 years ago, prayer and Bible study have been the foundation that has held me together. Through trials and triumphs, I’ve learned that growth and maturity in the Lord come through these very struggles. Life hasn’t always been easy, but God has faithfully used my challenges to shape my heart and spirit.

Today, I experienced an answer to a concern I’ve had for decades—an answer I longed for. It came through a person I visited with for the very first time! It reminded me that God works in ways we often don’t expect and in His timing. This blessing stirred my heart, reaffirming that waiting upon the Lord’s answers and direction is not passive; it’s active and leads to an exciting prayer life. But timing is everything!

Have you ever felt God’s presence while waiting for God’s answers?

The Struggle and the Call to Wait

I admit that struggling with my heart’s desires tests me. Yet, over the years, I’ve seen God’s faithfulness in answering prayers, sometimes in ways I don’t immediately understand. Even so, in moments of uncertainty, I continue to cry out to God, asking Him to enlighten my thoughts through His Holy Spirit. These times of prayer are vital. Perhaps you’ve felt this, too: the need to seek God’s wisdom when your mind is clouded or uncertain.

Prayer requires dedication and intention. Developing a meaningful prayer time takes effort and time. It isn’t always the same, but the process of prayer is transformative. As we wait for God to answer our prayers, we must also declutter our minds and focus on Him. Worship and adoration invite the Holy Spirit to cultivate His presence, allowing us to align our thoughts and hearts with His will.

Praying for Everything and Everyone

The Bible instructs us to pray about everything. We should pray even when we don’t understand what is happening, especially when our hearts and minds bounce around with different scenarios.

God hears us when we pray, and He will answer. Through prayer, we learn to release our burdens and trust Him fully.

Forgiveness is an essential part of our prayer lives. Repentance/confession brings peace. We are called to meditate on God’s Word, not through emptying our minds but by filling them with His truth. This meditation is an active, vibrant fellowship with God, where His Word becomes our guide and comfort. Interceding for others is another crucial aspect of prayer.

For almost 50 years, I’ve kept a prayer journal, even before prayer journals were popular. Looking back at those entries, I can see how God has guided me, comforted me, and answered countless prayers. It’s an amazing privilege to track the journey of faith and see how God has worked—both in my own life and in the lives of others.

Answered Prayers, Bible, and Transformation

Sometimes, prayers aren’t answered as we hoped, but they are still answered in God’s perfect timing within His will. From our perspective, we sometimes feel God is not moving when our prayers are unanswered. However, all prayers are answered (maybe not to our liking) but in ways that align with God’s more excellent plan. Through all of it, praising and thanking God strengthens our prayer lives and deepens our trust in Him.

Arnold Cole and Pamela Caudill Ovwighn conducted a study through the Center for Bible Engagement. They discovered that people who read the Bible once, twice, or three times a week experience nominal spiritual growth. According to their research, “If you read the Bible on more days than you don’t read the Bible, your chances for mature Christian behavior go way up.” ¹

When we commit to praying and studying God’s Word more often, we begin to change. The ultimate goal of prayer and Scripture is to be transformed into the image of Christ (2 Corinthians 3:18). This process is exciting and fulfilling.

Prayer is not just about asking for what we desire, even though we can ask for that as long as it is not something Scripture has already proven wrong. Prayer allows us to become more like the One we are praying to; thus, His desires also become our desires. We must remember that God knows our hearts. And how exciting it can be when God pours His favor on us!

Holy Bible

Trusting  God in His Timing

Many of us are praying specific prayers right now. I know I am. Waiting can be difficult, but it is in this waiting that our trust in God deepens. The goal is to learn to trust Him fully, and I long for this kind of trust—for myself and you, too.

I hope this blog makes sense since I am just writing and rambling!

God bless.

Bible Verses

If we live by the Spirit, let’s follow the Spirit as well (Galatians 5:17 NASB),

And [Jesus] opened their understanding, that they might comprehend the Scriptures (Luke 24:45 NKJV).

Show me your favor, God. I go to you for safety. I will find safety in the shadow of your wings (Psalms 57:1 NIRV).

Prayer

Lord, sometimes I do not know what or how to pray. Teach me what the Holy Spirit is leading me to understand. Remind me daily to get alone with You for prayer and Bible study. Awaken me, and help me to be transformed into Your image. Keep me from temptations because the Spirit is willing, but my flesh is weak. Thank you for loving me and guiding me in Your timing. Give me the patience to wait on You.

A Book Review: NKJV Study Bible For Kids by Patti Greene

If you receive this article through email, you can click on the title to read it on the GreenePastures.org blog-Pics and all!

——————–

I love seeing a package from Thomas Nelson on my doorstep. I know that is my next Bible to review. Viewing multiple Bibles throughout the year is an honor, privilege, and pleasure.

External Appeal

I recently received the NKJV Study Bible FOR KIDS. It arrived in an elegant box perfect for gifting! The Bible’s appealing blue leather soft cover attracted me immediately. The front cover would look extremely lovely with beautiful engraving imprinted on it. Its size makes it convenient to carry, and the tactile experience of this beautiful soft cover is pleasant to the touch. The shade of blue is appropriate for both girls and boys.

Two Concerns

Before delving into its contents, I must highlight two concerns I have about this Bible.

First, while this Bible is labeled “FOR KIDS,” there is a need for more clarity on the specific age group it targets. I seem to always be concerned when a Bible says it is for a particular audience; in this case, the box, the cover, and the title page all say it is for kids, but “kids” can encompass a broad spectrum from young children to adolescents, potentially affecting its long-term appeal. For those browsing a bookstore looking at this Bible in its boxed form, there would be no indication on the box for the purchaser regarding the Bible’s age or reading level.

Second, I strongly believe that promoting the Bible “FOR KIDS” may confuse a purchaser. If someone buys this Bible for an 11-year-old, it implies that as the child grows into a teenager, they may not want to use it due to the “FOR KIDS” inscription on the front cover.  As an alternative, I suggest it would have been better to keep the “FOR KIDS” on the title page but leave it off the front cover to not embarrass teenagers if they want to continue to use this Bible.

Age

The book details on Amazon say this book is for grades four through six, which would most likely be ages nine through 11. However, customers rate the reading age as seven to 11, a discrepancy when deciding upon the book.

However, I understand that education has been dumbed down over the years, so defining who can read this Bible is difficult.

What’s Inside?

Setting aside these considerations, the NKJV Study Bible For Kids impresses with its comprehensive features and design. Although the font size could be slightly larger across its 1,582 pages, the layout is well-organized with ample half-inch margins and sturdy paper quality. A striking yellow ribbon bookmark adds a touch of elegance. The margins all around the text are 1/2.” The paper quality appears nice and sturdy.

Educationally, this Bible excels with distinctive features color-coded throughout, giving extra information kids (and adults) would enjoy.

Book Review: NKJV Study Bible For Kids
1. Action Feature (purple) covers topics such as Friendship and Giving to God.
2. Epic Ideas (blue) explores themes such as A Man of True Wisdom and Don’t Be Afraid.
3. Spotlights (red) illuminate subjects like God Watches Over You and Jesus is God.
4. In Focus (purple) provides insights on terms like Demon-Possession and Prophecy.
5. Timelines (yellow) trace historical events from Genesis to Revelation. The print size could be made more reader-friendly.
6. On Location (green) includes maps detailing journeys and locations crucial to biblical narratives.
7. Starring Roles (yellow) profiles key figures Biblical characters like Moses and Titus.

Extra Features

Additionally, this Bible concludes with valuable resources such as a dictionary—concordance, book abbreviations, and detailed lists facilitating more straightforward navigation through its supplemental materials.

This edition of the Bible is currently in pre-order status on Amazon. It is listed for $49.99. It is also available in paperback and hardback at lower prices.

Valuable Resources

Despite my initial reservations about its target audience labeling, the NKJV Study Bible For Kids is a valuable resource for children and parents dedicated to imparting Biblical truths – especially to homeschoolers. Beyond its “FOR KIDS” designation, its depth and educational richness make it a commendable choice for serious Bible study and spiritual growth at any age.

In fact, I can see myself using this Bible in my quiet time and for the Study Bible tips and information.

God bless.

Voices: Choose to follow God’s path of life

God has a path of life for believers in Jesus. Are you on that path of following Jesus or heading down a different one?

8-28-2023 – By Patti Greene

_____________________________

Do you feel you are on the right path of life, following your Lord as closely as you know how? Or are you slipping slowly down the wrong path?

God has a path for believers in Jesus Christ. The Bible calls it the path of life.

As a child, I used to grab 10 to 15 Little Golden Books at a time and read one after another. One that always attracted me is Scuffy the Tugboat by Gertrude Crampton.

Scuffy was an adventurous little tugboat who believed he was meant for bigger things. He leaves his home, the man with the polka-dot tie, and the little boy who cared for him and sets off to explore the world. After his daring and treacherous adventure down a brook and then a raging river, Scuffy realizes home is where he’d rather be.

Twice during his adventure, Scuffy said, “This is the life for me.” The first time, he was leaving the reasonable, sensible path of his prior life to seek adventure. The second time was when he realized he already had been right where he needed to be all along—at home, safe in the arms of the man and boy who loved him.

Our goal should be to reach the point where we say right where we are, “This is the life for me.”

God wants us to understand we can know our path. Hopefully, it is the one he has set apart for us, but we must choose it.

Choices

In Psalms 16, King David declares he wants refuge in the Lord. In his communion with the Lord, he writes:

“You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy: at your right hand are pleasures forevermore” (Psalm 16:11 ESV).

What path does God want us to be on for him?

In his Tyndale Old Testament Commentary on Psalms 1–72, Derek Kidner defines a person on the right path of life asone whose affections are centered on God. This person finds satisfaction in God’s ways and does not pursue other gods. God’s protection and instruction bless him.

We have two choices we can make in life: (1) accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, and (2) follow God’s path for us leading to total joy in his presence.

We know we have eternal life, but sometimes we experience spiritual struggles. David trusted the Lord would show him the righteous path of life.

Righteousness and unrighteousness

As believers, we continually must choose between righteousness and unrighteousness. We want to walk in victory, but sometimes we find ourselves desiring things God has proclaimed unsuitable for us. We have that struggle between our flesh and the spirit, so we must ponder the path our feet are on.

We cannot experience God’s true purpose for life when we travel the destructive path. We may find ourselves in a continuous cycle of repeatedly sinning and confessing. To break that cycle, we must deny ourselves, take up Jesus’ cross and follow him.

“And he was saying to them all, ‘If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow me’” (Luke 9:23 NASB95).

“In the way of righteousness is life, and in its pathway, there is no death …” (Proverbs 10:28 Amplified Bible).

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous, so that he will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9 NASB).

Reroute and redirect

navigation system is an instrument that determines the position of a vehicle and the route to a particular place. The car’s navigation system tells the driver to turn left or right at a specific junction. The navigation system uses GPS signals to determine the vehicle’s location and direction.

It is a valuable tool with many benefits, such as helping people reach their destination, guiding drivers through congested areas, tracking packages, locating vehicles and more.

It is similar to the way God directs us in our lives. He shows us which way to turn, signals us on which way to proceed, helps us reach the destination and call of our lives, and guides us continually through the rough times in our lives.

Our navigation system must take its orders from the Lord. He will reroute and redirect our thoughts or actions if we genuinely want to follow his path.

‘This is the life for me’

Scuffy’s path of life allowed him to travel in a way that was not good for him. In the process, he enjoyed some of life’s simple pleasures, but as he kept traveling along the river, he was jammed with logs and became scared of the river moving faster and faster. Then the flood waters came, and the little tugboat desired the warmth and safety of home.

God can do the same for us as we travel our path of life.

Just like the man with the polka-dot tie who scooped Scuffy out of the water after his journey away and brought him home, God will do the same for us when we choose to live for him, decide against following unrighteous living, and allow him to reroute us when we stumble.

Let’s live victoriously in his presence along the path he has prepared for us.
