Bible Review – Spurgeon and the Church by Patti Greene

Book Review: Spurgeon and the Church

Thomas Nelson NKJV

Before the Review

Charles H. Spurgeon

On January 6, 1850, a fifteen-year-old Spurgeon was making his way to church when a blizzard forced him to seek shelter in a small Primitive Methodist chapel in Colchester. The scheduled preacher didn’t show, and a lay minister stood to deliver a simple message from Isaiah 45:22: “Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth.”

The man looked directly at the young Spurgeon and said, “Young man, you look very miserable… Look to Jesus Christ.” That moment transformed Spurgeon’s life forever. He later wrote, “I did look, and the cloud was gone, the darkness had rolled away, and that moment I saw the sun.”

“I did look, and the cloud was gone, the darkness had rolled away, and that moment I saw the sun.”

London’s Pulpit Phenomenon

At just nineteen, Spurgeon became pastor of the New Park Street Chapel in Southwark, London. Within months, the chapel’s 1,200 seats proved insufficient, and the congregation moved to increasingly larger venues—including the Exeter Hall and the Surrey Music Hall—to accommodate the thousands who came to hear him preach.

In 1861, the Metropolitan Tabernacle opened with seating for 5,600. It remained filled Sunday after Sunday for the next thirty-one years. Spurgeon’s sermons were transcribed weekly, selling 25,000 copies each, and were translated into dozens of languages. He became known as the “Prince of Preachers.”

My First Impression

When I first opened the box that contained this Bible, I said, “What in the world is this? A Bible without the Gospels! I’m really not sure about this.” I wasn’t sure whether to call it a book or a Bible.

My Overall Impression

This Bible is attractive and clearly made with care. It’s the kind of Bible you would enjoy setting out on a table or giving as a sweet gift. Even though it’s lovely, some of the choices inside keep me from giving it a high rating. Below are my positives and negatives.

Positives

• Beautiful layout — The organized design is very pretty, and it feels especially nice to hold.

• Thoughtful touches — You can tell someone took time to make it look nice. The brown flexible cover with gold outer pages is attractive. On the spine, a nice imprint says, “Spurgeon and the Church,” printed in the same matching gold as the fish symbol on the front cover.

• A bright silk ribbon  — is an attractive placeholder.

• Nice presentation page — which includes a Presented To, By, Date, and Occasion line outlined in a lovely bright blue ribbon border, which is consistent with the blue font seen within titles throughout the book.

• Seamless interior layout — The design is immediately appealing. It feels like something meant to be cherished.

• Overall detailing — The decorative elements and formatting show intentionality and care.

• The leather-soft cover — creates that kind of feeling I get when I see pastors holding up and waving a lightweight Bible when preaching.

• The font — The font style is set in the Thomas Nelson NKJV typeface. This font is easy to read and looks extremely attractive against the white page background.

Negatives

• Missing Gospels — My biggest issue is that the book includes passages from Acts through Revelation but does not include anything from the Gospels. Leaving out Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John is a bit like giving someone a beautifully wrapped gift but forgetting to include the gift inside. The Gospels show Jesus’ life, words, miracles, and compassion. Without them, the book feels incomplete.

• Many Bibles include a summary of each book of the Bible. This one does not. It opens with a paragraphed quote from Charles Spurgeon. I feel like Spurgeon is sitting at the head of the table, and Jesus is placed at the end.

Final Thought

No matter how hard I try, I cannot justify a Bible that doesn’t include the Gospels, which makes it hard for me to recommend it as a devotional or Scripture‑study resource. I understand the concept of a Bible about the early church; but this particular book still does not sit well with me.  This book is lovely to look at, but it doesn’t offer the full richness of Scripture—especially since it excludes the life and words of Jesus Himself.

  • I am rating Spurgeon and the Church as a 3-star, although for the right person at the right time, it would be lovely and honestly appreciated — maybe for a student studying Charles Spurgeon.

Worth It: 28-Day Bible Study on ACTS

Worth It: 28-Day Bible Study on ACTS by Patti Greene

Jay Smith writes the following summary on the Book of Acts.

The genre of the book of Acts is Narrative History with several Sermons. Luke, the author of the Gospel of Luke, was a doctor and Gentile. He wrote this book circa 60-62 A.D. It is Luke’s sequel to the Gospel of Luke. It is titled “Acts” to emphasize that this book records the “Acts of the Apostles through the work of the Holy Spirit”. The key personalities of Acts are Peter, Paul, John, James, Stephen, Barnabas, Timothy, Lydia, Silas, and Apollos.

Luke wrote the book of Acts (Acts of the Apostles) to record how believers were empowered by the Holy Spirit, worked to spread the Gospel of Christ, and are a model for the future church.

The book of Acts is also the history of the birth, the founding, and the spread of the Church from Jerusalem to Rome. It also records the transition of the Church from being almost exclusively a Jewish institution into becoming a Gentile and an international institution. Consequently, it records the transition of Christianity from a Jewish religion into an international faith. The Gospel of salvation is for all because Jesus Christ is Lord of all.¹

Looking for a 28-day Bible study? Why not go through the Book of Acts – ONE chapter a day! Get out your Bible, copy and paste the text between the asterisks into a Word document. Save it and print it out each day and start reading all about the beginning of the church from Luke’s viewpoint. It’s an awesome book. I know you will love it.

My Favorite Verses from Acts:

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth. (Acts 1:8).

For if this plan or this undertaking is of man, it will fail; but if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow them. (Acts 5:38b).

In all things, I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ (Acts 20:35).

Prayer:

Dear Father, I want to learn more about your holy Bible. Please give me the power and strength to work through this 28-day study in Acts. I desire to hear from you. I desire for a renewed love for You. Give me wisdom and understanding each day as I read through each chapter. Thank you for this opportunity. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

God Bless,
